The Ria Formosa was created in the eighteenth century by the last great oceanic earthquake, and is a continually changing landscape made up of saltwater marshes and freshwater lagoons. The excellent water quality allows many fish species of the Northern Atlantic as well as other marine organisms to reproduce there.

Protected Natural Environment

For more than thirty years the Ria Formosa Nature Reserve has been a protected environment that is the habitat of over 70 bird species, including herons, hoopoes, white storks, coots, black winged stilts and the rare purple gallinule.

Archaeological Sites

There are also many archaeological sites around Ria Formosa that show the remains of Roman and pre-Roman settlements. The combination of history amid this natural setting makes every visit unforgettable.
